Garden City, NY 鈥� The 星空无限传媒 Spring 2011 Cultural Program is proud to present director Josh Fox, who will speak about his Academy Award-nominated documentary Gasland on April 12 at 1:15 p.m. in the College Center Building.
The Halliburton-developed natural gas drilling technology of 鈥渇racking鈥� or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a 鈥淪audi Arabia of natural gas鈥� just beneath us. But is it safe? Fracking is employed in deep natural gas well drilling. Once a well is drilled, millions of gallons of water, sand and proprietary chemicals are injected, under high pressure, into a well. The pressure fractures the shale and props open fissures that enable natural gas to flow more freely out of the well. The problem is that toxic chemicals can contaminate the area鈥檚 water and air as a result of the fracking processes. When Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled Pennsylvania town that reports that residents can light their drinking water on fire is just one of the many astonishing revelations of Gasland.
Josh Fox is founder and artistic director of the award winning film and theater production house International WOW Co. Over the last 15 years, he has written, directed and produced two feature films and over 20 works for the stage.
