April 8 Martin Tankleff

Garden City, NY 鈥 On Monday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. in the College Center Building, the Nassau Community College Cultural Program will present 鈥淩ighting Justice鈥檚 Wrongs鈥 (download hi res photo). During the program, Long Island native Martin Tankleff will speak about his journey from being convicted of killing his parents, to serving time in jail, to being released and embarking on a lifelong crusade to help the innocent.

In 1988, Tankleff, then 17, was charged with beating and stabbing his parents to death in their waterfront home in Belle Terre, Long Island. The lead detective in the case said in interviews that he originally suspected Tankleff because he was unemotional at the murder scene. Some say he came across the same way at the trial until the guilty verdicts came in. A jury found him guilty in 1990 and he was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison. The conviction stemmed largely from a disputed and immediately renounced confession. Tankleff鈥檚 supporters, including his parents鈥 siblings, never gave up on the case, and in 2007 his conviction was vacated. By the time he was released, he had spent 17 years in jail. Today, Tankleff is in his third year of law school. He is a man who knows that sometimes justice can be far from perfect.鈥淩ighting Justice鈥檚 Wrongs鈥 is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled.
